TIPS FOR GOOD ORAL HEALTH

To preserve our general health, maintaining proper oral hygiene is essential.

Throughout our lives, we can encounter numerous diseases originating in our mouths, making daily oral hygiene essential. Good oral hygiene primarily aims to eliminate biofilm and dental plaque (where oral bacteria reside), as their effects are harmful to our gums and teeth.

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD ORAL HYGIENE BE STARTED?

The first human teeth appear around six months of age, at which point it becomes necessary to begin good oral hygiene habits. For babies, it is advisable to use moist gauze pads to clean their mouths and to schedule regular visits with a pediatric dentist, who will check that their teeth are growing and developing properly.

TIPS FOR PROPER ORAL HYGIENE

Tooth brushing: We should brush our teeth at least once a day, as bacteria begin to multiply again in our mouths within 24 hours of the last cleaning. Ideally, we should brush our teeth after every meal, and more thoroughly before going to bed at night. To establish the habit of daily brushing, it’s recommended to start from a young age, accompanying our children during brushing and talking to them about how important this habit is for their health. When children wear braces, it’s even more important to emphasize their oral hygiene.

It’s also important to use the correct size toothbrush, with a head that isn’t too large and soft to medium bristles, and to change your toothbrush every three months. The change of seasons is the perfect time to establish this as a benchmark for changing your toothbrush.

When brushing our teeth, we should spend at least two minutes to ensure effective cleaning, using a technique appropriate to each person’s tooth shape, dexterity, and other factors. One such technique is the “Bass Technique,” which removes bacteria from the gum line by placing the brush at a 45-degree angle and resting the bristles on the gum line of each tooth. A gentle, vibrating motion is then used, sweeping towards the edge of the tooth. With an electric toothbrush, the movement should be very slow, as this type of brush already mimics conventional brushing.

Dental floss: Interproximal spaces (spaces between teeth) must be cleaned regularly. Using dental floss is essential for this, although if the space between teeth is wide, very small brushes that are perfectly suited to this situation can be used.

This type of cleaning is essential to do every day, as these interproximal spaces are where residue and food scraps accumulate and should be removed.

To use dental floss, take a 30-45 cm length. Wrap it around the middle fingers of each hand, leaving a 5-7 cm space between them, and insert it between your teeth. Gently follow the curves of your teeth without forcing them down, as this can damage your gums. Using the floss against the tooth surface, move it up and down, removing any food particles trapped between the teeth.

Tongue Cleaning: Tongue scrapers or tongue cleaners are available to help remove debris that accumulates on the surface of your tongue. Clean your tongue with a back-to-front motion to remove food particles, mucus, bacteria, etc. If you don’t have a tongue scraper, a small spoon works perfectly for this purpose; use it gently.

Oral irrigators: Commonly known as mouthwashes. They are an aid, after brushing and flossing, for removing bacteria deposited in areas that are difficult to reach.

Mouthwash is used as a rinsing motion for about 30 seconds. There are mouthwashes with different components specifically formulated to address individual cleaning needs, helping to eliminate bacteria and leaving the mouth with a pleasant freshness.

Reduce your consumption of sugary foods: This is very important, as consuming these types of foods is especially harmful and damaging to our oral health. Therefore, after eating sweets, ice cream, carbonated drinks, etc., it is advisable to brush your teeth immediately.

Dental visits: Of course, and we’ll never tire of reminding you of this. An annual visit (ideally two per year) to the dentist for a check-up of your mouth, teeth, and gums should be scheduled, in addition to a professional dental cleaning by a hygienist.

To preserve our general health, maintaining proper oral hygiene is essential.
