In this article, we’ll try to ensure that these changes are positive for your oral health; and to that end, we’ll provide you with a series of specific recommendations aimed at improving your dental health and hygiene.

1. Rising temperatures cause more microorganisms to proliferate in the mouth, so you must take extra care with your dental hygiene. Brush your teeth daily after every meal.

2. Find the right toothbrush for your mouth. Every mouth has different needs, and the market offers many options to suit those needs. Keep your toothbrush for yourself and don’t share it with anyone else to avoid spreading oral infections. After each use, rinse your toothbrush well and store it upright with the bristles facing upwards. If it’s damp, don’t cover the bristles.

3. Also, take care of your tongue and palate hygiene. There are tongue cleaners available for this, and some toothbrushes even have them built in.

4. Change your toothbrush with each change of season. The brush should be changed at least every three months, or sooner if the bristles or filaments are frayed.

5. Use mouthwash after brushing. It’s advisable to consult your dentist about which type of mouthwash is right for you, as some have restrictions or are unsuitable for certain situations.

6. Avoid excessive consumption of carbonated drinks, acidic juices, coffee, tea, and wine, as these can damage your teeth. Using straws is a good way to minimize this damage. It’s also advisable to reduce your intake of sugary foods like sodas, cakes, and ice cream. If you do eat them, brush your teeth immediately afterward, as the bacteria that cause cavities feed on sugar.

7. Increase your consumption of foods rich in fluoride, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and D. Foods like apples contain fluoride, and eating them between meals prevents you from snacking on other things and helps your dental health.

8. Avoid eating excessively cold foods. The sudden temperature change in the food you consume increases tooth sensitivity, potentially leading to inflammation of the blood vessels inside your teeth and causing pain. And of course, if you love chewing ice in the summer, stop. Chewing ice can chip your teeth.

9. Keep your mouth closed while swimming in pools. The chlorine in the water promotes tartar buildup, stains teeth, and damages gums. After swimming, it’s advisable to clean your mouth thoroughly.

10. Tobacco is very harmful to your oral health. Avoid it! Smoking damages teeth and all the surrounding tissue, leading to premature aging.

11.- At least once a year go to your dentist and have your teeth cleaned

12. In addition to using a toothbrush, it is recommended to use dental floss or an interdental brush to remove food debris that accumulates between the teeth.

13. If you go on vacation or spend many hours outdoors, always carry a dental kit with you. That way, if you go to the beach or a restaurant, you can brush your teeth after meals.

14. Summer is the perfect time to break bad habits like nail-biting. This habit can deform your teeth. Also, avoid opening bottles with your teeth when you don’t have a bottle opener handy. The damage this habit can cause to your teeth can be significant.

15. During the summer we also tend to do more sports, which leads to an increase in dental injuries. To avoid them, we recommend using mouthguards. If you ride bicycles or motorcycles, don’t forget to wear a helmet. If you dive, protect your mouth as well.

16. When packing for your getaway, don’t forget to pack your relaxation splint or orthodontic appliance if you use them.

17. When sunbathing at beaches or pools, remember to use sunscreen on your lips as well. Excessive sun exposure without protection can cause oral cancer. The lips are one of the most exposed and least protected parts of the body. It’s also advisable to wear hats or caps to protect this area.

18. It is recommended to visit the dentist at least twice a year. Schedule one of these appointments before your summer vacation. The dentist will advise you on the care you should take to maintain your oral health.

19. Take advantage of the summer to carry out your dental treatments: whitening, dental implants, veneers, orthodontics… The holidays are the perfect time to start them and avoid delaying them.

20. Don’t hesitate to see your dentist if you have any persistent discomfort or pain in your teeth or any area of your mouth. Appropriate treatment at the right time is more effective and prevents more serious problems.

Hoping that these tips are useful to you and that you put them into practice; from Acosta Cubero Dental Clinic we wish you a happy and SMILING summer.

The start of summer and the holidays also mark the beginning of changes in our daily habits.
