It appears after contact with an external stimulus such as the consumption of hot or cold foods or drinks, sweets, etc.

It is one of the most frequent causes of dental pain, as it affects 1 in 7 people and can lead to the appearance of other oral pathologies such as periodontitis or cavities if not treated properly.

It appears between the ages of 18 and 40, and its prevalence has increased in young people due to excessive consumption of acidogenic drinks and the use of teeth whitening without professional supervision.

Origin and causes of tooth sensitivity

There are many causes of tooth sensitivity. They are usually related to the patient’s lifestyle and oral hygiene habits. These causes can include:

Brushing your teeth incorrectly, both in frequency and force, and also using an abrasive toothpaste that damages the root cementum or dental enamel and leaves the dentin exposed.

The ingestion of acidic foods or drinks causes the tooth to erode or decalcify.

Los malos hábitos del paciente o el exceso de fuerza en la masticación pueden generar desgaste y, por tanto, que se quede al descubierto la dentina.

Periodontal treatments can cause part of the gum to be removed, resulting in gingival recession.

Having a general health condition or being in situations that create an acidic oral environment. These can include psychological conditions such as bulimia, stomach conditions such as ulcers, or occupational conditions such as bakers, for example.

Gingival recession can be caused by dental treatment, such as a professional cleaning or orthodontics. It can also be caused by an anatomical anomaly in the patient that exposes the dentin due to the defect.

Dental diagnosis and treatment

Tooth sensitivity pain is very easy to identify because it manifests in response to different but very clear stimuli, such as very hot or cold drinks and/or foods, acidic/sweet products, brushing teeth… It is a fairly intense pain, located exactly in the affected tooth and temporary, since it only hurts at the moment the stimulus occurs.

When pain is not related to any specific stimulus or persists after the stimulus and we cannot accurately determine the area where it occurs, it is possible that it is not tooth sensitivity that causes it, but another problem such as cavities.

For this, it is best to consult a professional for an inspection and a more accurate diagnosis.

Regarding the treatment of tooth sensitivity, great importance must be given to establishing preventive measures in addition to the appropriate treatment determined by the professional both in consultation and afterwards at home.

The recommendations for preventive measures are:

Dietary habits: avoid acidic foods and drinks.

Bad habits: DO NOT use wooden chopsticks, avoid bruxism…

Proper oral hygiene: brush your teeth properly and use a low-abrasive toothpaste.

In addition, it is very important to use desensitizing agents, such as potassium salts, in the treatment of tooth sensitivity.

Most products used to treat sensitivity contain potassium salts, which penetrate the exposed dentin tubules and reach the tooth pulp, blocking the nerve transmission that causes pain. Some products also contain fluorides, which can partially block the dentin tubules.

One of the things that has completely transformed the treatment of tooth sensitivity is the use of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles, which allow for the complete sealing of dentin tubules. They are the perfect size and concentration to settle on damaged enamel, completely sealing exposed dentin tubules and preventing external stimuli from causing tooth pain. Furthermore, these nanoparticles also create a protective layer on the tooth that resists rinsing from the moment of first application.

When we treat tooth sensitivity every day with the right products, the painful sensation is eliminated, and we can also return to normal and get rid of that sensitivity in both teeth and gums.

Tooth sensitivity, or dentin hypersensitivity, is a temporary and intense tooth pain caused by exposure of the dentin to the oral environment.
