However, as specialists we warn: waiting that long can be a mistake.

At an early age (between 6 and 9), the facial bones are still growing and are “mouldable”. This gives us a golden opportunity to guide that growth and correct skeletal problems that, in adulthood, could only be fixed with surgery. This is what we call interceptive orthodontics or orthopaedics.

At Acosta Cubero Dental Clinic, we want to look after your little ones’ smiles right from the start. Here are the signs that tell you whether your child needs a check-up now. 👇

1. Children’s orthodontics: warning signs at home 🏠

You don’t need to be a dentist to suspect something isn’t quite right. Look out for these details in their day-to-day life:

Mouth breathing: If your child sleeps with their mouth open or snores, they may have a narrow palate, which stops the tongue from resting in the right place and the jaw from growing properly.

Thumb-sucking or using a dummy for a long time: These habits deform the palate and push the teeth outwards (“bunny teeth”). Correcting the palate early is the aim of maxillary orthopaedics.

Crossbite: If, when biting, the upper teeth sit inside the lower ones (on one or both sides), the palate needs widening as soon as possible.

Early loss of baby teeth: If a baby molar fell out very early because of decay, the neighbouring teeth can drift and close the space needed for the permanent tooth.

2. Braces or Invisalign for children? 🧒✨

Technology has come a very long way. If we detect a problem, it’s no longer always necessary to use the bulky metal appliances of the past.

At our clinic in Vélez-Málaga we offer Invisalign First, a clear aligner system designed specifically for growing mouths.

Advantages: They’re removable (children take them out to eat and brush their teeth, so hygiene is much better), they have no wires to poke and they’re very comfortable. Kids get used to them in no time!

3. The goal: prevention is better than cure 🛡️

Interceptive orthodontics usually lasts a short time (around 12–18 months) and its aim is to prepare the ground. By correcting the bone in time (widening the palate, bringing the lower jaw forward…), we make sure the permanent teeth come through with enough space. This avoids having to remove healthy teeth in the future, or very long and demanding orthodontic treatment in the teenage years.

Peace of mind starts with a check-up in Vélez-Málaga 📍

The best gift you can give your child is a healthy mouth. The Spanish Orthodontic Society recommends the first visit at age 6 (find out more about interceptive orthodontics for children).

If your little one is around that age or you’ve noticed any of the signs above, come and see us at Acosta Cubero Dental Clinic. Dr Inmaculada Acosta will check how their teeth are developing with great care and patience. Book an appointment for their first check-up.

Let’s look after tomorrow’s smile today! 🪁😁

If you have young children, you’ve probably asked yourself this question about children’s orthodontics: “When should I take them to the dentist to see if they need a brace?” There’s a popular belief in Vélez-Málaga that you have to wait until a child has all their permanent teeth (at around 12 or 13) before starting […]

[80,118,117

post-5642","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-invisalign","category-childrens-orthodontics","category-pediatric-dentistry
["GET
