In <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/share.google\/4kcs2y3mIKmxlrKTb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">V\u00e9lez-M\u00e1laga<\/a><\/strong>, the bakeries already smell of orange blossom water and cream. It is a lovely tradition to share with the family, but we dentists know this delicious ring cake has a &#8220;dark side&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, just after 6 January, <a href=\"https:\/\/acostacubero.com\/en\/oral-health\/christmas-dental-emergencies-toothache\/\">emergency dental visits<\/a> go up for the same reason: <strong>broken teeth caused by the Rosc\u00f3n&#8217;s &#8220;surprise&#8221;<\/strong>. The little king figurine, the dried bean or even hard candied fruit can catch you out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/acostacubero.com\/en\/clinic\/\">Cl\u00ednica Dental Acosta Cubero<\/a><\/strong>, we want you to enjoy your Rosc\u00f3n with complete peace of mind. Here are our tips so that the only crown you see is the paper one, not a dental crown. \ud83d\udc47<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. The hidden danger in the Rosc\u00f3n de Reyes: the figurine and the bean \ud83e\udd34\ud83e\uded8<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems obvious, but sometimes enthusiasm gets the better of us. The surprises hidden inside the dough are usually made of hard ceramic or rigid plastic. Biting down hard on them, thinking it is soft dough, is the number one cause of chipped teeth and cracked molars at this time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Our advice:<\/strong> don&#8217;t trust it. Even if you think you know where the cut is, the figurine may have moved during baking. <strong>Chew slowly and gently<\/strong>, &#8220;testing the ground&#8221; before biting hard.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tip:<\/strong> if there are young children or older people with dentures at the table, it is best to cut their slice into pieces with a knife before they start eating, so you can spot the surprise and avoid accidents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Watch out for candied fruit and sugar \ud83c\udf4a<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rosc\u00f3n is a sugar bomb, and the candied fruit (those colourful strips of orange or melon) is usually very sticky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The risk:<\/strong> sticky sugar clings to your molars and to orthodontic appliances, feeding the bacteria that cause tooth decay. What&#8217;s more, if you have old fillings or veneers, biting into very hard, sticky fruit could loosen them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The solution:<\/strong> enjoy your slice, of course! But try to brush your teeth (or at least rinse well with water) about 20-30 minutes after you finish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. The Three Kings parade and the sweets \ud83c\udf6c<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you go to the parade in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/share.google\/4kcs2y3mIKmxlrKTb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">V\u00e9lez-M\u00e1laga<\/a><\/strong> or <strong>Torre del Mar<\/strong>, your pockets will end up full of sweets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hard sweets:<\/strong> don&#8217;t bite them. Sucking them is better to avoid fractures, although it exposes your teeth to sugar for longer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Soft sweets (jelly sweets):<\/strong> these are the worst for <a href=\"https:\/\/acostacubero.com\/en\/dental-care\/do-you-wear-braces-follow-these-tips\/\">braces and orthodontic appliances<\/a> and for fillings, as they act like &#8220;cement&#8221; that pulls appliances off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What should you do if there is an accident this 6 January? \ud83c\udd98<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If, despite your precautions, you bite the figurine and feel a &#8220;crack&#8221;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stay calm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the tooth has broken and you have the fragment, keep it in milk or saline (or in your own saliva).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it is sensitive to air or cold water, avoid chewing on that side.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call us as soon as the bank holidays are over.
