🩸 Do your gums bleed when you brush? No, it’s not “normal” and we explain why in Vélez-Málaga 🛑

encías que sangran al cepillarse, señal de gingivitis o periodontitis

It is a scene that happens every morning in many homes in Vélez-Málaga: you are brushing your teeth in front of the mirror and, when you spit out the toothpaste, you see a pink or reddish trace. “Oh well, I must have brushed too hard today”, you think, you rinse and get on with your day as if nothing had happened.

If this sounds familiar, we need to have a serious talk. There is a popular belief that a little bleeding from the gums now and then is “normal”. Wrong.

Think about it this way: if you washed your hands and they started to bleed, would you think that was normal? Or would you rush to the doctor? The same goes for your mouth. Bleeding is always a warning sign, a cry for help from your body telling you there is an active infection that needs attention straight away.

At Clínica Dental Acosta Cubero we want to bust myths and help you keep your smile for life. Today we look in depth at the causes of bleeding gums and, most importantly, how to fix them. 👇

1. Why do bleeding gums happen? Gingivitis ⚠️

The number one cause has a name: dental plaque. It is that sticky, invisible film that constantly forms on your teeth. If we do not remove it thoroughly with daily brushing, it hardens and turns into tartar.

When tartar builds up along the edge where the tooth meets the gum, bacteria start to attack the tissue.

  • Your body’s reaction: to defend itself against these bacteria, your body sends more blood to the area, which causes inflammation (gingivitis). That is why the gums look red and swollen and bleed at the slightest touch of the toothbrush or floss.
  • The good news: at this stage, the damage is 100% reversible. With a professional clean at our clinic and better hygiene at home, the gums become healthy and pink again within a few days.

2. The real danger: from gingivitis to periodontitis (pyorrhoea) 🦠

This is where the problem gets serious. If you ignore the bleeding and gingivitis for a long time, the infection moves deeper, attacking the foundations of the tooth. This is periodontitis.

  • What happens? The gum pulls away from the tooth, forming “periodontal pockets” where more bacteria build up out of reach of the toothbrush. The infection starts to destroy the bone that holds the tooth in place.
  • The silent symptoms: it often does not hurt. The patient notices constant bad breath, teeth that look “longer” (because the gum recedes) and, in advanced stages, teeth that move.
  • The ultimate risk: if it is not treated, losing the tooth is inevitable.

3. The link with your general health: it’s not just your mouth ❤️

What happens in your mouth does not stay in your mouth. Scientific studies have shown a strong link between gum disease and serious health problems in the rest of the body:

  • Cardiovascular disease: bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream.
  • Diabetes: it is a vicious circle; diabetes makes gum health worse and gum infection makes blood sugar harder to control.
  • Problems in pregnancy: it increases the risk of premature birth.

4. “But I brush three times a day…” 🪥

Many patients come to our clinic in Vélez-Málaga frustrated because, despite brushing, their gums still bleed. The problem is not usually how often, but the technique and the tools.

  • The hard toothbrush mistake: using a hard toothbrush or brushing aggressively does not clean better; it only damages the gums. Always use a medium or soft brush or, better still, an electric one with a pressure sensor.
  • The secret is between your teeth: a toothbrush only cleans 60% of the surface. The other 40% is between your teeth. If you do not use dental floss or interdental brushes every day, that area never gets cleaned, and that is exactly where gum disease begins.

5. How do we treat it at Clínica Acosta Cubero? 🛠️

If your gums bleed, the first step is not to panic and to make an appointment so we can assess the dental treatment you need.

  1. Diagnosis: we will assess whether it is simple gingivitis or whether there is bone loss (periodontitis) using a probe and X-rays.
  2. Treatment:
    • If it is mild: a deep professional dental clean.
    • If it is periodontitis: we will carry out scaling and root planing (known as curettage) to remove the bacteria below the gum line and smooth the root so the gum can reattach. It is done under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel any pain.
