Do you wear braces? FOLLOW THESE TIPS

In dentistry, there are different specialties depending on the oral health problem being addressed. Among these specialties is ORTHODONTICS, which is based primarily on diagnosing, treating, and preventing various malocclusions.

In orthodontic treatment, the dentist uses different types of appliances, which can be classified into two classes:

  • Fixed Orthodontics
  • Removable Orthodontics.

We are going to deal with fixed orthodontics, better known today as BRACKETS.

Braces are appliances that are bonded or cemented to the teeth to move them. This is achieved through wires placed between the teeth, which receive the force from the brackets, thus correcting the position of each tooth. These appliances will remain fixed to the teeth for a period of time, which varies depending on the type of correction required in each case. Therefore, it is essential to follow a series of guidelines for the effectiveness of the treatment and for maintaining good oral health.

Below we will give you 10 tips that you should follow if you are undergoing dental treatment with braces.

1.- Diet: You should avoid consuming foods with high sugar content, very hard or sticky foods; as these foods can damage the appliance, detach it or become stuck to the tooth with the greater risk of producing cavities.

2. Do not drink citrus beverages, as they are harmful to teeth and orthodontics due to their acidity.

3. Avoid snacking between meals, as this leaves food residue between your teeth, making you more prone to cavities.

4. Maintain good oral hygiene: This is essential for anyone who wears braces. Brushing and cleaning your teeth after every meal is a must. Both your teeth and braces must be kept clean at all times.

5. Use fluoridated toothpaste. The high fluoride content of toothpaste helps eliminate plaque buildup and therefore prevents cavities.

6. Use a special toothbrush for braces. Medium or soft interproximal brushes are ideal; in addition to using dental floss.

7. Schedule regular checkups. Appointments with your orthodontist to review the progress of your treatment are essential for its success and help avoid prolonging it longer than necessary.

8. Braces, especially at the beginning of treatment, can cause chafing and small lesions in the oral mucosa, so it is advisable to use orthodontic wax to prevent and avoid this type of damage.

9. If you also have elastic bands with your braces, use them properly. It is essential that you faithfully follow the orthodontist’s instructions so that the treatment progresses smoothly and without complications.

10. For any questions or emergencies, consult your orthodontist. The specialist is trained to provide the correct solution for any eventuality that may arise during treatment.
