The benefits of the sun are many and, with the right precautions, we can enjoy those relaxing hours in the sun while our health soaks up all the good things our star has to offer. Yes, really: our skin (always with proper sun protection), our bones, our immune system and our sleep all benefit from the effect of the sun on our bodies.
Surprised?
Benefits of the sun for your teeth: vitamin D
Now to what concerns us when it comes to teeth. Just as the sun benefits our bones, it does the same for our teeth. Every time we go to the beach or the pool, or do sport outdoors, UV rays help our bodies produce vitamin D, which is essential for mineralisation and for the absorption of phosphorus and calcium in the gut. And if you spend a lot of time outdoors, take a look at these tips to look after your dental health in summer.
Vitamin D can be produced in our skin, so unlike other vitamins it doesn’t have to come from food. Just 5 to 10 minutes of sun exposure two or three times a week is enough to top up the vitamin D our bodies need to keep bones and teeth healthy and strong. But please, don’t forget your sun protection.
Other health benefits of the sun
The sun also helps clear up acne and improves the appearance of our skin. It stimulates the immune system by increasing the number of white blood cells (our body’s protective army), keeps cholesterol levels balanced and lowers blood pressure. Likewise, and although it may seem contradictory, it protects against some types of cancer, lifts our mood and improves the quality of our sleep and our relationships with others. And finally, it protects against multiple sclerosis.
