😷 Persistent bad breath: why chewing gum doesn’t work and how to really fix it 🌬️

Covering your mouth when talking to someone up close, chewing gum compulsively before a meeting or overusing mouthwashes that sting… Persistent bad breath (chronic halitosis) is the kind that keeps coming back however much you brush, chew gum or rinse with mouthwash, and hardly anyone dares to talk about it. If you live in Vélez-Málaga or elsewhere in the Axarquía and feel that a bad taste in your mouth follows you around all day, we have good news: you don’t have to resign yourself to living like this.

At Acosta Cubero Dental Clinic, in the centre of Vélez-Málaga, we deal with this problem every day, naturally and discreetly. Today we want to bust the biggest myths about bad breath and explain, from a medical point of view, where the problem is really hiding and how to get rid of it at the root. Find out how to feel fresh and confident when you talk again! 🗣️

The big myth: “it comes from the stomach” 🤔

When someone has persistent bad breath, the first thing they usually think is that they have a digestive or stomach problem. However, medical science is very clear on this: in 90% of cases, halitosis originates exclusively in the mouth.

The bad smell is the direct result of the activity of certain bacteria. When these bacteria feed on the microscopic food debris left in our mouths, they release gases called volatile sulphur compounds. That gas is precisely what causes the unpleasant odour. 🛡️

Persistent bad breath: the hidden causes your toothbrush can’t reach ⚠️

Many patients tell us, frustrated: “But I brush my teeth three times a day, so why do I still have bad breath?” The answer is that these bacteria are experts at hiding in places your toothbrush at home simply can’t reach:

  • Under the gums (periodontitis): if you have built-up tartar and inflamed gums, “pockets” form between the gum and the root of the tooth. Inside them, a nest of anaerobic bacteria (which live without oxygen) develops, producing a very strong and distinctive smell.
  • The back of the tongue: the tongue isn’t smooth; it has thousands of papillae that act like a carpet. If we don’t clean it specifically, the deepest part of the tongue builds up a whitish or yellowish coating packed with odour-causing bacteria.
  • Hidden cavities and old fillings: a cavity or an ill-fitting filling acts as a small trap where food gets stuck and slowly breaks down. ✨

Why chewing gum and mouthwash don’t cure persistent bad breath ⚙️

Using mint gum or supermarket mouthwashes with lots of alcohol is like spraying perfume on dirty clothes. The minty smell masks the problem for about 20 minutes, but as soon as the effect wears off, the bad breath comes back even stronger (because alcohol dries out the mouth, and a lack of saliva makes halitosis worse). Sugar-free gum can help you produce saliva as an extra, like other bad breath remedies and prevention habits at home, but it doesn’t remove the source.

To solve it for good at our clinic in Vélez-Málaga, the source has to go: the tartar under the gum, the coating on the tongue or the cavity trapping food, with the dental treatments each case needs. We walk you through the whole process (diagnosis, deep cleaning and hygiene guidance) in our guide to halitosis treatment at the clinic.
